Hello. My name is Bob Schwartz and I am the Singletree Soup Nazi. How did I get this nickname? Well…
I’ve always loved to cook; this is something I picked up from my late father (AKA “The Commander”). During the Covid pandemic, I had just moved back to Colorado and settled in a neighborhood in Edwards Colorado called “Singletree”. To keep myself busy during the pandemic, I started to cook. A Lot. Since I frequently made more than my wife, daughter and I could consume, and I didn’t have a freezer (yet, they were hard to come by during the beginning of the pandemic) I started giving away food. It was fun and it felt good to share my food with others. This also turned out to be a great way to meet people in my new neighborhood. After a while, I just settled into a rhythm. Friday was “Soup Day”. I would plan, shop, prep, make and distribute the soup of the week to friends and neighbors. One of my old fiends (you know who you are Mr. Chairman) kiddingly started call me the Singletree Soup Nazi. Clearly an homage to the character from the Seinfeld TV series. It made me laugh, so I ran with it.
After the pandemic, I kept at it. Not on a regular schedule, but ad hoc as I felt like it and as my schedule would allow. I expanded my repertoire and started smoking meats, experimenting with finer foods and even started making fermented hot sauces.
Several years after the pandemic, I was unfortunate enough to have a heart attack. It wasn’t too bad, and I came through with no residual issues. It was, however, a wakeup call in many ways. One way in particular goes back to my late father. As I mentioned, he loved to cook. He had several recipes in his repertoire that were sort of “signature” dishes. One of which was his famous Duck Liver Pâté. He did show me how to make this once. Unfortunately, I did not write the recipe down. Even more unfortunately, he had a fatal heart attack just a few years later at the age of 67 (only 4 years older than me at the time of this writing) and took this (and many other) recipes to his grave.
After my heart attack, and somewhat jokingly, my daughter started kidding me about writing down my recipes as not to repeat my fathers’ mistake. I started to document what I love to cook, I thought might be nice to share these recipes with others. Being a bit of a technology nerd, I thought it was a good idea to create a website so I could not only document my recipes, but also easily share them with others.
Hence, SingleTreeSoupNazi.com was born!
SingleTreeSoupNazi.com is both an homage to The Commander and a legacy for my daughter.
This website continues to evolve. When I create a new dish (and especially if my daughter likes it) I add the recipe to the website. I’m also a tinkerer, so I sometimes change the structure of the site. Basically, it’s a work in progress. But if you like it, feel free to subscribe!
